Time Capsule

Every new home school year I try to think of something fun to get us all excited about formal learning again. Today we sort-of-officially started our 2011-2012 schedule. The past couple of weeks have been spent cleaning out and rearranging the classroom, sorting and ordering books, accessing each child's needs, and coming up with our curriculum for the year. As usual for the first day of school, we went through the new schedule and yearly plans, and then worked on a jump-start project. This year we made a time capsule that will be opened at the end of the school year.

We all wrote an essay titled "today", names were exchanged and the kids wrote letters to each other as well as to me, I wrote a letter to each child, we came up with individual goals for the school year, the kids all traced their hands, we printed out the weather report for the week, looked through the local newspaper and cut out different articles of interest, added a school schedule and pictures from today.

Then we put it all in a box and taped it up good, dug out the Christmas wrapping paper, and labeled it "Do Not Open Until May 14, 2012." Granted I can still remember where I put it on May 14, 2012, it may become a fun tradition every new school year.
